CLEVELAND -- A man was killed in a car accident while trying to recover his carjacked SUV on Cleveland's west side early Sunday morning, police said.

A man borrowing his friend's SUV was reportedly carjacked by a group of people shortly before 4 a.m.

The man ran from the group of carjackers and called police.

While police were interviewing the victim, the owner of the SUV was being interviewed by police down the street, near West 98th Street and Madison Avenue. While being interviewed, he spotted his stolen vehicle.

He yelled, "that's my car right there," police said.

The man grabbed onto the luggage rack on the roof of the car as the suspect tried to drive off.

The suspect lost control of the car and hit a tree, a pole and a fire hydrant before flipping the car onto its side.

Police found the owner of the car critically wounded and unconscious after the crash. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office was called to the scene where they recovered his body.

The fire hydrant was hit so hard, it landed several front yards away from the crash.

The suspect driver fled the crash, but officers caught and arrested him in a nearby backyard.

All four suspects were arrested for aggravated robbery motor vehicle. The driver was also charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.

Police found the suspects with a number of bats and razor knives and towed another vehicle in connection with the robbery.
