COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The new police chief in Ohio's largest city is taking the oath of office publicly, two weeks after moving into the job.

Deputy Chief Kimberley Jacobs was officially sworn in as Columbus police chief on April 5.

Mayor Michael Coleman and other city officials planned to attend the public ceremony Friday at the police academy.

Jacobs is the first woman to serve as police chief in Columbus. She replaces an interim leader who has served since the previous chief retired.

Jacobs started with Columbus Police in 1979 as a patrol officer on the city's West Side.

Jacobs has overseen training, budgeting matters and disciplinary issues. She also served as a liaison to City Hall and labor unions.
