CLEVELAND -- The big carriers rule Cleveland's airwaves when it comes to cellular coverage and quality in Northeast Ohio, a new report says.
June results from Root Metrics, a Seattle-based leading independent mobile research firm, point to AT&T and Verizon ranking atop virtually every major coverage category.
In Cleveland, it's a back-and-forth affair between America's two largest carriers. Verizon wins out for the increasingly important data speeds that power a growing number of smartphones, tablets and other devices
Meanwhile, AT&T takes the crown for call performance -- the foundation of the mobile phone industry.
If there was an award for "most improved carrier," Sprint would take the crown in Cleveland. Sprint doubled its data speeds since last fall and improved text message delivery speed.
T-Mobile saw a steady speed increase as well, while AT&T actually got slower.

Akron is a different story. While the sample size was smaller (around 18,000 compared to over 50,000 in Cleveland), the stats show that AT&T is the dominant carrier across the board in the heart of Summit County.
T-Mobile emerged as a dark horse, matching "Ma Bell" in call quality, but that's where the surprises end.

An interesting twist: AT&T's data speeds clocked in faster than they did in November, a reflection of the carrier's expanded high speed LTE network rollout.
