One out of every 20 Americans have had their identity stolen, and in many cases, those people compromised their personal information by making simple mistakes.

There are some basic rules to keeping your information private. First of all, before you plug in your birth date, credit card information or social security number online, make sure it's a legitimate and secure site.

One way to protect yourself online, is to make sure your anti-virus software is up to date. Run a check at least once a week to make sure your computer doesn't have any infections.

If you receive an e-mail from a retailer, bank or credit card, but don't use their services, do not click on any of the links inside that e-mail. Most likely, this is a "phishing" scam designed to hack into your personal computer.

For more information on how to stay safe online, get out of credit debt or learn about scams, check out the National Consumer Protection website.
