People seem to be trading in and trading up to newer cars and trucks.

Most automakers report double-digit increase sales from this June when compared to last June.

Toyota reports nationally, sales went up 60 percent, Honda experienced a 49 percent increase while Ford sales were up 7 percent.

The Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association reports that new car sales here locally are up over 3 percent from last year.

Bob Gillingham, of Gillingham Ford in Parma, says, his business is up anywhere from 10 to 15 percent.

"There have been a lot of people who've held off purchasing a vehicle as long as they could," Gillingham.

Customers like John Davis are fueling the surge.

"I traded in a PT Cruiser and I've had that for 7 years," Davis said.

Deciding to buy new now was an easy choice for Davis to make.

"They're offering 0 percent on the loan and that helps a lot as interest is pretty expensive these days."

For others, the switch was less about incentives and more about personal economics.

"I think people have found that they can't keep fixing their car economically so they throw in the towel," Gillingham said.

Ford leads sales locally with 3,217 vehicles sold in June, followed by Chevy at 2,551 and then Toyota.

Analysts say the growth shown in sales in June show no signs of slowing anytime soon.
