If you're shelling out hundreds of dollars for your smart phone plan each month, you might want to keep reading.

You can text or call anyone in the world for free by using an app, or application.

You might want to take a look at your cell phone bill this month and consider signing up for the most basic plan and then downloading these free apps.

Viber is a free app to download and available on both iPhone and Android phones. You can call and text anyone in the world for free. All you need is a 3G or a Wi-Fi connection.

Here's how it works. Start the app and enter your phone number. Viber sends you a 4 digit code and, once you get it, enter it in, and you're ready for your first call.

Contacts that already have Viber installed will have a Viber badge appear next to their name. Tap those names to place your free call.

You can also invite your contacts to join Viber so your next call is a free one. A version for Blackberry devices is in the works.

Text Plus is another free app that allows you to text anyone anywhere in the world for free, and place free calls anywhere in the US. It's available for IOS and Android, and texting is available on Windows. The app requires a WiFi, 3G or CU connection.

Another cool feature with Text plus, you can use your tablet as a phone for free, all you need is a wi-Fi connection.

But why not talk face to face with Skype or Tango? All free video calls.

Skype is tried and true, compatible with Android, iPhone, iPad and Windows. You'll need a 3G, CU or Wi-Fi connection.

Tango claims to be the only app that lets you make free video calls, phone calls, and send free video messages, and now group messages. Skype uses 3G, CU, and Wi-Fi, and compatible with iPhone, Android and Windows.

So whichever app you choose to download, you won't  need to unload anymore cash out of your pocket.
