CLEVELAND -- A recount scheduled for today in a 2012 judicial race has been canceled at the request of the trailing candidate.

Cullen Sweeney, a candidate for the Court of Common Pleas requested the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections not go through with the recount. Sweeney trailed his opponent by 1,281 votes according to the results from the November General Election.

In his letter to the Board, Sweeney said the recount was not likely to change the outcome and thanked the Board for their work.

The recount was scheduled automatically because the candidates were separated by less than one-half of one percent. The decision by Sweeney to not move forward with the recount saves Cuyahoga County $50,000.

"We appreciate Mr. Sweeney's confidence in the Board of Elections and his trust that our election results are accurate," said Pat McDonald, Deputy Director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. "We were ready to go forward with the recount, however I credit Mr. Sweeney for saving taxpayer dollars with his decision not to spend additional time and money when the results would not have changed, or changed enough to affect the outcome," said McDonald.

The recount was to be the last of 4 recounts conducted by the Board.
