CUYAHOGA COUNTY -- The head of the new reform government installed largely because of a corruption probe says Jimmy Dimora may have received one of the harshest sentences ever for government wrongdoing.

County Executive Ed FitzGerald used to be an FBI agent and assistant prosecutor.

He thinks Dimora's lack of contrition was a key factor.

"It's a tough punishment. It might shock some people. But the conduct shocked a lot of people. I don't think he helped himself by never expressing any remorse for his whole situation that put the area through this for the last couple years," he said.

FitzGerald said the punishment should also be a deterrent.

"If anyone was thinking about engaging in this conduct, the message is the consequences for this type of behavior is very severe," he said.

FitzGerald said there are ongoing FBI and County reviews of the purchase of the Ameritrust building when Dimora was commissioner.

He predicted some "news" from the county review soon.

He also said Dimora was the lead figure in the corruption scandal even though Frank Russo got more money in bribes.

"In many ways he was the face of corruption...I think this closes a chapter," he said.
