AKRON -- A federal judge has denied former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora's request to delay his upcoming trial.

Dimora's first trial on public corruption related bribery charges will go forth beginning with jury selection on Jan. 4 in Akron.

Dimora had asked the court to combine his two pending trials into one and push back the start to allow his defense team more time to prepare.

Judge Sarah Lioi rejected the request.

Charges alleging extortion in connection with a second indictment will be brought against Dimora in a later trial.  His lawyers had argued the two trials represented double jeopardy.

Dimora has denied wrongdoing and maintained his innocence in the public corruption investigation which began three years ago.
