CLEVELAND -- A federal judge has refused to move a former county commissioner's high-profile corruption trial out of northeast Ohio.

Defense attorneys for former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora had said they feared a media circus at the trial scheduled for Jan. 4 in Akron.

The judge also rejected a defense request to try Dimora separately from a co-defendant. The judge agreed to expand jury questioning to check for any bias.

Dimora also is a former county Democratic party chief in Cleveland. He has pleaded not guilty to racketeering, bribery and other charges. The government says he took bribes in exchange for steering county contracts.

There was no immediate comment on the ruling from the Dimora defense. A message seeking comment was left Tuesday at their law offices.
