CLEVELAND - Starting Tuesday, the old Weights and Measures seals that are on gas pumps, scales, and cash registers throughout Cuyahoga County will be removed and replaced with new Cuyahoga County seals.

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald made the announcement Monday afternoon.

Cuyahoga County protects consumers by actively testing gas pumps, scales and other equipment in order to make sure they are accurate and, therefore, consumers are not being cheated, FitzGerald said, in a release.

Previous seals featured the face of former Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo and were routinely defaced over the years.

Russo resigned Sept. 9 and is facing 22 years in prison. He was one of the top targets of the federal probe into corruption in Cuyahoga County.

The probe went public July 28, 2008, when nearly 200 IRS and FBI agents fanned out across the county to raid the offices of government officials and businesses that had won public contracts.

Russo's office and home were on that list.

Russo, first elected county auditor in 1998, had his face imprinted on the seals every year.
