Can what you eat affect your acne?

Scientists say food doesn't cause acne, but some argue certain foods may make it worse.

The biggest offenders in the debate are foods packed with sugar: Sodas, cakes, cookies and high-fat dairy.

For decades, scientists have been discussing the suspected link between food and acne.

A new article in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics looked at almost 30 studies throughout the last 50 years.

The findings were inconclusive.

Bottom line: You don't want to reach for sugary treats.

Instead, the study authors suggest eating lean protein, going easy on saturated fats and consuming plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Dermatologists say cutting back on high-fat dairy helps some of their patients.

"There is some evidence that dairy may affect some people's skin and I do have people who go off dairy and find their skin is clearer," says dermatologist Dr. Rutledge Forney.

But don't cut out the good dairy suck as low-fat milk or yogurt. These contain calcium and other nutrients needed to build strong bones.

If you have acne, check with your doctor to see if a change in diet might help.
