NEW YORK -- The Fire Department of New York says a crane has collapsed at a construction site in the city's Queens borough, injuring seven people, three of them seriously.

The FDNY got the call shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Long Island City neighborhood.

The crane was visible along the East River behind a big neon "Pepsi Cola" sign, a local landmark.

The three people who were seriously injured are in stable condition. The equipment was described as a mobile crane unit.

Randall Todd tells NBC New York that he was walking his dogs near the construction site when he heard what sounded like breaking metal.

He says the crane arm seemed to fold on itself, like an accordion, and the vertical tower seemed to snap in half.
