MINNEAPOLIS - Skiers and snowmobilers are loving the winter storm that's dumped up to 16 inches of snow on parts of the Upper Midwest.

Last year, folks in the Minneapolis area suffered through a near snowless winter. And this season, the Twin Cities saw only meager bursts of snow before the weekend storm. But with the fresh blast, people are excited.

At Lutsen Mountains ski resort 90 miles northeast of Duluth, Minn., marketing director Jim Vick says you could "hear the hoots and hollers" as skiers took to the slopes amid the falling snow. The resort got up to 8 inches yesterday.

He says folks really felt cheated by last winter because they didn't get the snow "and they are just dying for it."

The snowfall has also been a boon for the hardware stores. Mike Frattalone co-owns a Twin Cities hardware store chain and says his 18 stores have sold a lot of snow shovels, ice melt and "hundreds" of snowblowers since Sunday's snow.

Last winter, the Twin Cities' heaviest snowfall was 4.2 inches on Dec. 3.
