CLEVELAND -- A former MetroHealth Medical Center nurse's aide faces more than 10 years in prison after she admitted to repeatedly abusing a patient at a county-funded nursing home, prosecutors said.

Virgen Caraballo pleaded guilty to felony charges of patient abuse during a hearing in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. A trial on the charges had been set to begin Tuesday.

Caraballo was caught on videotape abusing patient Esther Piskor by a hidden camera that was installed by Piskor's son in her room at the Prentiss Center nursing home operated by MetroHealth.

The videos showed Caraballo violently tossing Piskor onto a bed as well as other abuse.

Cleveland Police charged her the day after Channel 3 News contacted them regarding the case.

Until that point, Caraballo had been known as a good employee, with supervisors noting in personnel records that Caraballo "is very conscientious with the care she gives" and that she is "very attentive to residents' needs."

Caraballo also agreed to surrender her state tested nurse's aide license, meaning she will not be allowed to work in any facility that receives Medicaid.

A second nurse's aide, Maria Karban, is set to go on trial in January on charges that she sprayed Piskor in the face with a body perfume.
