CLEVELAND -- Edward Henderson decided to plead guilty to assault and fleeing a police officer in a New Year's Day incident that is now under federal investigation.
Henderson claims he was viciously attacked by a number of Cleveland police officers after he was face down on the ground and handcuffed.
Henderson suffered fractures to his face, a detached retina and other injuries.
The alleged beating was recorded on video from a police helicopter but the tape has not been released to the public.
A federal grand jury is now investigating the incident. In a separate proceeding, Henderson agreed to a plea deal with county prosecutors.
Henderson pleaded guilty to single counts of assault and fleeing an officer. He is suing police for the serious injuries he suffered after he was in police custody.
"We now hope police will take responsibility for what they did to Mr. Henderson," said Dan Chaplin, the lawyer representing Henderson in his criminal case.
