"You can't see through my pants. They're not tight. They're not baggy. And they're not falling off," said Stephanie Mulligan, 16, a junior at Lakewood High.
Stephanie and her mom say the teenager suffered a back injury when she fell down a flight of stairs.
Her doctor asked the high school to allow Stephanie to wear loose-fitting pants, including sweats and yoga pants, that would be less restricting and less painful than jeans.
The school says the sweatpants are in violation of the dress code and says the student won't be allowed inside the school wearing the sweatpants.
"There are lots of ways you can wear loose-fitting clothing and be in compliance with our dress code," said Principal William Wagner.
"Why is this such a big deal, especiallly since we have a doctor's note?" asked Mary Hayghe, Stephanie's mother.
She said her daughter has already missed eight days of school because of the pants controversy.
"It's just not fair to my child," Hayghe said.
