National Make a Difference Day is a great opportunity to join others in a national day of volunteering.

Right here at home we meet volunteers every day who are making a difference one day, one project at a time. One way some volunteers are doing that is by giving there time at The Gathering Place.

Each day families are affected by cancer and many of those people need a place to go.

The Gathering Place is a nonprofit cancer support center that has become a second home for people battling the second deadliest disease in America. They offer programs and services for families free of charge.

One of the ways they are able to offer these services is by selling household items in their warehouse.

Each day 15-30 volunteers like Ellen Neye gather at the special warehouse to take in furniture, dishes and knickknacks. They then clean and prep each item for sale.

"We have been lucky and these things just keep coming. It is astounding to us how generous people are," says Neye. "If you come here once and see how beautiful the merchandise is and how beautiful displayed it is, you have to come back."

Each volunteer has helped to raise over $1 million to support the center this year alone.

The warehouse has become a special place for Marcia Schumann.

"At The Gathering Place they have people that are going through similar circumstances.  The support they get from the staff and other participants is beyond their wildest expectations," said Schumann.

It is that support that has kept her coming back for 13 years. She began her volunteer service because her friend's son had cancer and years later her husband lost his cancer battle.

"Without the support that I have gotten from this group of women and men that work here and the gathering place, I couldn't have gotten through this difficult time," Schumann added. "I think it fills a need in this community.  It just gives people a place to go who are in need of support and information."

If you would like to volunteer or donate your unused furniture, you can contact The Gathering Place at (216) 595-9546.

The warehouse will have its sale on Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
