CLEVELAND --   CEO Eric Gordon says the last year has meant huge change for the Cleveland schools, but not enough.

Gordon delivered the annual State of the Schools address at the City Club.  To accomodate the 850 attending, the speech was held at Public Hall.

"The clock is ticking on the children of Cleveland," Gordon said. "Ohio's new school report card has higher standards, and we must improve. It is daunting, we are at the bottom of Ohio's districts."

In his speech, Gordon recounted the Cleveland Plan becoming Ohio law to foster reform in the Cleveland schools and the passage of Issue 107.  The issue marked the first time a Cleveland school levy passed in 16 years. But he also started the speech with listing all the Fs the district received on the last state report card.

CEO Gordon also said for the first time in over a decade they are hiring hundreds of teachers.  Last year the district laid off 400.  This district is being selective looking for teachers that understand what it takes in urban education.

As Education Reporter Kim Wheeler reported Tuesday at 6, the district is planning to hire 150 new teachers, some may even come from large districts like Philadelphia and Chicago, where teachers were laid off.
