CLEVELAND -- A Department of Justice report from 2009 found that 60 percent of American children are exposed to violence.

In Cuyahoga County, the numbers are the same and experts on child development are worried. It can cause long-term psychological, emotional and physical problems.

"It triggers a fight, flight or freeze response in children, and when they perceive a threat they go back to that traumatic event," says CEO of Positive Education Program Frank Fecser.

He says the key is helping children talk about these feelings surrounding violence they suffered or witnessed, and making them feel safe.

We have had several high profile incidents of violence recently and crime that our cameras noticed children were witnessing.

Education Reporter Kim Wheeler looks at the lasting impact it can have on children and our community.
