LORAIN -- The city of Lorain and the Lorain City School District are struggling to survive.

The area has been hit hard by the economy and unemployment, and families are struggling to get by.

Not only that, but the Lorain City Schools are now one of two districts in Ohio in academic emergency on the state report card.

As a result of the growing poverty, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lorain County are filling the gap. They serve about 700 children a day with meals and homework help.

While the Lorain City Schools have about a 65 percent graduation rate, the Boys and Girls Clubs students have about a 90 percent graduation rate.
