Browns should trade Gordon, Cameron for stellar draft picks

As much as it pains me to say this, the Cleveland Browns should trade WR Josh Gordon and TE Jordan Cameron before Tuesday's 4 p.m. trade deadline.

That being said, they should only do that if they get a few really stellar first-round picks in the 2014 NFL Draft. Yes, they are our best offensive players but, without a decent quarterback, they can't catch what isn't thrown.

It's like a fabulous car with a great body and wheels but with no steering wheel. You can't get anywhere without a steering wheel.

Now I have never been one to say "Wait until next year" and I'm not saying it now. But you need to put emotion aside -- harder for me than most -- and look at the situation realistically.

Sure, we only lost to the KC Chiefs 23-17 Sunday. We have a really good defense overall, we even sacked the Kansas City quarterback a couple of times. We have good punt returners and a good field goal kicker.

We have had 20 quarterbacks since 1999. We already let Phil Dawson and Josh Cribbs go, and then traded Trent Richardson to Indianapolis. QB Brian Hoyer looked promising but then he was injured.

We have a new owner (Jimmy Haslam) and a new coach (Rob Chudzinski) who need to build a winner on their own. They aren't satisfied with doing it with the team they were given and they need to create their own team.

We have a beautiful stadium and rabid, loyal fans that never give up. Both deserve an equally fabulous team, which is something we just don't have right now and haven't had for some time.

Sometimes you have to go out on a limb and make that extra effort to get not only what you want but what you need, against all odds.

(I myself have a bat signal carved into my Halloween pumpkin on my front balcony, hoping that Batman will answer it. I know it's a long shot but I've tried everything else. But I digress.)

I think Haslam is going to be aggressive in his challenge to build a Browns team that will win. The 2014 NFL Draft will be loaded with talent and the Browns need to have the ability to go shopping with confidence.

I remember a favorite line from a friend: On a cold night, a hot bowl of soup tastes good. To that I say, on a Sunday night, a hot bowl of soup after a Browns win tastes even better.
