BAINBRIDGE TOWNSHIP -- As you enter Bainbridge Township, you may notice that their official flower is the begonia. But what you may not know, is how and why begonias are here in the U.S.
The answer lies right down the street at Lowe's Greenhouse. WKYC Photojournalist Mike Greene brings you the story.
The business was established in 1926 by Carlton Lowe, who is known for bringing the begonia back to the U.S. He brought it from Belgium after World War I. And he grew that plant and shipped it from this location.
The business was purchased by the Griff family in the mid-50's, and offers one-stop shopping for your gardening needs.
They have flowers and plants for your garden, trees and shrubs, but also provide services. Full service landscaping, and also a florist.
Most customers come here for their gardening needs.
Gardening is a very intimidating activity. And it's their job to make it easy for folks to be successful.
Customers come from as far away as Mantua to shop here.
The beautiful weather has customers shopping earlier than normal, but is it too early to start your planting?
The people at Lowe's say it's still way too early to do a lot of the typical gardening things you think with spring.
Maybe plant some pansies in pots and put them on the front porch, and enjoy those until the season is really here.
Anytime of the season is fine to shop in their gift store, which offers everything from gardening related products, to scarves, and even jewelry.
Lowe's not only sells plants and flowers, but they grow a good portion of their products right on-site.
They say it's an important thing to grow their own, have control, have their own packaging, and have the types of plants that our customers really, really want.
