CLEVELAND -- Spectators like Rob and Paula Young thought they were encountering just an everyday road block, at first.

"We were just walking by and we thought they were tearing down a building," Paula said. "Then I saw the props."

The props installed this week include huge sections of "concrete" made out of styrofoam, "bullet-riddled" taxi cabs and faux storefronts, imitating a New York City street.

Next week, the action really begins. Crews will begin filming some of the pyrotechnic "explosion" scenes on Monday.

If you're hoping to catch a celebrity sighting, they're already in town.

Samuel L. Jackson visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Wednesday night, according to a Rock Hall spokesperson.

Other sightings include the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Tremont restaurants and NASA in Sandusky, where another scene is being filmed.

The main section of filming is taking place between Euclid and Prospect avenues.

Filming is expected to be completed by September 2.

"The Avengers" is the largest movie production to ever film in Ohio and will employ hundreds of Ohio-based cast and crew.

Over in Parma, Chevrolet Boulevard will be the scene of some movie-making pyrotechnics in the upcoming movie "The Avengers," pending approval of city council.

On Aug. 18 and Aug. 19, producers plan to stage and film scenes involving fireballs shooting 30 feet into the air near the former Chevy powertrain building.

Test shots would be performed on Aug. 18 before the actual film shoot on Aug. 19. The production would be on-site from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.

Police plan to close portions of Chevrolet Boulevard from time to time throughout both days to allow for safe filming of the pyrotechnics.

Council has to approve the film shoot to allow the explosives to be brought into Parma and to waive the normal 30-day notice.

Producers say the city will be reimbursed for the cost of the police officers needed to control traffic and say every effort will be made to minimize the shoot's impact on neighbors.

"Our administration has been working on this endeavor for several days," said Parma Mayor Dean DePiero. "We are pleased and excited it came together. It's not every day Hollywood
comes to Parma."

Film crews are currently preparing a section of downtown for filming, which will begin early next week.

East 9th Street between Euclid and Prospect avenues is now closed to recreate the block into a section of New York City.

The Metromix staff has visited the set daily to photograph the process. Be sure to check back every day for updates on the production as it continues in Cleveland.

"The Avengers" is shooting throughout the month of August in downtown Cleveland.
