CLEVELAND -- An estimated one thousand motorcycles are expected to participate in the 7th Annual Firefighters Memorial Ride.
The event takes place Sunday May 29. John "KIKS" Kikol, President, said that the purpose of the Firefighters Memorial Ride is to express the community's support for Firefighters/EMS/Para.m.edics who risk their lives in the Line of Duty.
During 2010, there were 85 "on duty" firefighter fatalities nationally, 55 were were volunteers and 30 were career firefighters. It's important to recognize the estimated 800,000 volunteer firefighters nationally that comprises 73 percent of all firefighters in the United Sates.
A public ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Firefighters Memorial, across from the Browns Stadium, with Monica Robins, WKYC Senior Health Correspondent, as the MC. During the ceremony there will be a reading of the eight Ohio Fallen Firefighters who lost their lives during 2010.
Additionally the winners of the ten $1000 scholarships will be introduced and this year a firefighter will also be the recipient of a $1000 scholarship.
The motorcycles will stage on the south side of the Browns Stadium beginning at 9:00 a.m., all participants must pre-register for the 45 mile processional ride that begins at 11:00 a.m. The processional ride will pass through Cleveland, Parma, Parma Heights, North Royalton, Strongsville, Middleburg Heights, Brook Park and will pass by 12 fire-houses along the route.
The ride will conclude at Harley Davidson Sales Company of Cleveland (event sponsor) , 14550 Lorain Road where food and entertainment will be provided to all registered riders from 12:30 to 3:00 PM.
The proceeds from the FFMR goes to provide annual scholarships to fa.m.ilies of Firefighters/EMS in the six county area and donations are made to the fa.m.ilies of Ohio's Fallen Firefighters.
