In troubled economic times, Cuyahoga County will be providing a safety net for lower and moderate-income families and individuals.

One of the features of the safety net is an assurance to working-poor families that they will receive the Earned Income Tax Credit, a refundable tax credit (it is disbursed as cash, not simply through reductions of future taxes).

The credit is claimed exclusively through the act of filing an income tax return. It assists families with children much more than childless claimants and eligibility for the credit is set $3,000 higher for married couples than for single parent families.

Congress made some changes in EITC income eligibility standards for the 2009 season including creation of a new category of coverage.  Families with three children can now receive a greater award that those with two children.  Maximum credits for families with qualifying children range from a low of $3,043 for one child to $5,657 for families with three or more qualifying children.

In addition to the E.I.T.C., there are a number of other new credits associated with the Economic Stimulus program that can be claimed this year. Some of those are: The Make Work Pay Credit; First-Time Homebuyer Credit Expansion; Education Benefits; and Money Back for New Vehicle Purchases.

Parking is free surrounding the Virgil Brown Building on Saturdays but automobiles must be parked at a meter.

For an appointment call 2-1-1.
