Founder of Bil-Jac pet food remembered for innovation, leadership

MEDINA -- The man who created Bil-Jac pet food is being remembered for his innovation, generosity and leadership.

Bill Kelly died at his home in Medina over the weekend. He was 95.

Kelly's research and development of pet nutrition led to the launch in 1947 of his Bil-Jac brand.

Over the course of his career, Kelly continued to research pet nutrition and patented processing breakthroughs that helped affect the lives of millions of pets worldwide. His company not only created the Bil-Jac frozen dog food formula but also a premium line of dry food and dog treats.

Kelly was a founding member of the Pet Food Institute and was a lifelong advocate for pet health and well-being.

Kelly attended Hiram College. He served on the boards for numerous non-profit community organizations including 12 years on the Highland School board and 39 years on the Medina Hospital board. He helped create the hospital's foundation which granted numerous scholarships.

Kelly is also remembered as a dedicated family man. He is survived by his three sons who remain in leadership positions within the Bil-Jac organization. Kelly is also survived by his seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
