As of July 3, 2013, the western United States, including Alaska, continues to have increased fire activity. A total of 33 large fires have burned 499,853 acres. High temperatures, dry conditions and thunderstorms continue to fuel these wildland fires.

One notable fire, the Yarnell Hill fire, which is the largest one in Arizona, has burned more than 8,000 acres and is only 8 percent contained. This is one of 5 fires occurring in the state of Arizona.

Alaska has five fires currently, with the largest one, the Beaver Log Lakes fire, burning more than 63,000 acres.
