Attention shifted to the West on Wednesday as the first in a series of strong Pacific disturbances kicked up moderate to heavy rain and strong winds across California and the Pacific Northwest.

The first round of rain and high elevation snow reached the region early Wednesday morning as a cold front approached the West Coast. Rainfall totals from this system were expected to reach up to 3 inches in the wettest areas with locally higher totals and local flooding possible through Thursday morning.

In regards to snow, snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches were anticipated in the Sierra Nevadas at elevations above 6,000 feet, with winds gusting to 60 mph. Wind Advisories were issued for parts of the northern California as southeast winds were expected to gust to 40 mph.

Meanwhile, east of the Continental Divide, a cold front from southeastern Canada dropped into the Great Lakes and New England areas through the day and kicked up lake effect snow showers downwind of the lakes through the afternoon. Coastal showers and inland snow were anticipated in upper New England later in the day.
