Cleveland, OH -- Nick Swisher hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox, 1-0, on Friday.

The Indians recorded just three hits, but Swisher's single to right was all the offense Cleveland needed.

Justin Masterson (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and a walk in his outing. In three starts this season, he has allowed just one run over 22 innings and has an ERA of 0.41.

Jose Quintana got the start for the White Sox, and he pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball. However, Jesse Crain (0-1) allowed the lone run and earned the loss.

Swisher's single came with two outs in the inning.

Crain came in to relieve Matt Thornton on the mound and struck out Drew Stubbs to start the frame, but then allowed a double to Michael Bourn.

Asdrubal Cabrera was next and he grounded out to second, but Bourn advanced. Jason Kipnis was intentionally walked as Swisher came to bat. He knocked it into right field and brought Bourn home, ending the game.

Game Notes

Chicago's Conor Gillapsie went 2-for-3 with a double ... Masterson threw 113 pitches, with 81 of them thrown for strikes ... The Indians avoided opening 0-3 at home for the first time in 17 years ... The White Sox start the season 0-4 on the road for the first time since 1978 ... Chicago was without pitching coach Don Cooper, who is hospitalized with an intestinal illness.
