Kissimmee, FL (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros signed infielder Ronny
Cedeno to a one-year contract on Sunday.
Cedeno, 30, hit .290 in 16 games with the St. Louis Cardinals in Spring
Training before being released.
"Ronny is a veteran player at a premium position that will stabilize our
infield," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said in a statement. "He gives
our young pitching staff a quality defender behind them."
Primarily a shortstop, Cedeno has also seen time at second base and third
Cedeno batted .259 with four home runs and 22 RBI over 78 games for the New
York Mets last season.
A career .247 hitter, the Venezuela native has registered 37 homers, 108
doubles and 218 RBI while playing in 779 games with the Chicago Cubs, Seattle,
Pittsburgh and the Mets.
