CLEVELAND -- A Cleveland woman has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for the theft of more than $41,000 in government benefits.

According to federal prosecutors, India N. Parker, 37, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to two counts of theft of government property and five counts of making false statements.

Parker's 5-year-old daughter died in late 2006 and prosecutors say she let the remains decay before putting them in a trash bag and leaving them in a trash can for garbage pickup.  The child's body was never found, according to court documents.

Prosecutors say Parker lied about her daughter's whereabouts to friends, family and investigators and then stole and used for herself nearly $41,000 in Social Security payments made to her daughter and another $1300 in food stamp benefits.

Parker will serve her federal sentence after completing her state prison time related to offenses against a human corpse, tampering with evidence and criminal mischief.
