AKRON -- The Akron Police Department is warning residents to be aware of a phone scheme currently operating that uses scare tactics to try and obtain personal information over unpaid speed camera tickets.
The callers pretend to be from the Ohio State Recovery Program and attempt to obtain credit card information from unpaid tickets issued as a result of the city's speed cameras.
Residents are told, "if you don't pay the ticket now with a credit card, an Akron Municipal Court judge will immediately issue an arrest warrant for you arrest."
Police say residents should know the speed camera tickets in the City of Akron are handled civilly and not through the Akron Municipal Court or by a judge.
If you have a question about a speed camera ticket, please call 1-866-684-8383. Any outstanding tickets or fines can be verified through this number.
If you are already a victim of this speed camera scam, contact your credit card company and stop payment then call your local police to report it.
