CLEVELAND -- The U.S. Marshals have arrested a man in the 1993 rape of an 18-year-old woman.

The U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office and the Cleveland Police took park in the arrest of Elias Acevedo, 49.

Acevedo was arrested this morning in the 2300 block of Seymour Avenue.

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said, "The citizens of Seymour Avenue witnessed the arrest of another sexual predator with a violent history of preying on women. We made all of our resources available when it was revealed that Acevedo was in the area. Thanks to the cooperation of Sheriff Frank Bova and the numerous law enforcement agencies within the Task Force, a Rape suspect who eluded capture for nearly 20 years can now be brought to justice."

Acevedo was convicted of sexual battery in 2003 and required to register as a sex offender. He was linked to the 1993 rape through DNA testing.

The testing is the result of Attorney General Mike DeWine asking police departments in 2011 to send their untested sex assault evidence kits to the state labs.

The kits are helping to clear cold case sex assault cases.  But prosecutors are also up against a 20 year statute of limitations to be able to file charges.
