CANTON, Ohio -- A 21-year-old Canton woman died Saturday after the driver of the car she was in fled from a police traffic stop and crashed about a mile away.

A highway patrol trooper stopped Christopher W. Dinger, 27, of Canton, for speeding at Cherry Street SE, north of U.S. Route 30, at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Dinger stopped at first, but then sped away after the trooper got out of his car.

Dinger was headed east on E. Tuscarawas Street for less than a mile when he lost control of the car, spun out and slid off the left side of the road, hitting a curb. His front seat passenger, Stephanie A. Casto, was thrown from the car.

Casto was taken to Aultman Hospital where she died from her injuries.

A trooper saw Dinger running from the crash scene as he pulled up. Dinger was apprehended and arrested shortly thereafter. He was treated for minor injuries at Aultman Hospital.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor. Dinger submitted to a breath test at the Canton Highway Patrol Post, revealing .088 percent blood alcohol content. Ohio's legal limit is .08 percent.

Dinger was also driving with a suspended license and had an active arrest warrant for failure to appear in court, highway patrol said.

He was taken to the Stark County Jail and charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana after the drugs were found in his vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation and additional charges are expected as Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to work with the Canton City Prosecutor's Office.
