AKRON -- A man accused of fatally shooting his wife in her hospital bed has been ruled competent to stand trial.
A judge made the ruling for John Wise during a pre-trial hearing today in Akron.
Wise, 67, of Massillon is charged with shooting his wife Barbara in the ICU unit of an Akron hospital last August. Barbara Wise, 65, died the next day.
Friends of the couple say Barbara had been left disabled by stroke and claim the couple agreed they never wanted to become disabled in a nursing home. Attorneys for Wise have described the shooting as an act of mercy.
Wise has pleaded not guilty to charges.
