The former construction project coordinator for MetroHealth Medical Center was convicted of bribery and extortion last June after a 2 1/2-week trial and jury deliberations of only 5 hours.

Greco, 56, was indicted on Nov. 23, 2009, of taking bribes from Nilesh Patel, vice president of East-West Construction Co., in exchange for business with the hospital.

The company's contracts with the hospital were then artificially inflated, prosecutors said. From 2001 to 2008, Greco took gift cards to Sam's Club, Tops Markets, Giant Eagle, Dillard's, Home Depot and Applebee's, as well as free landscaping, jewelry and other gifts.

Patel pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme and is serving a 3½-year prison sentence.

Forty-seven people including public officials, Cuyahoga County employees and contractors have been indicted in the investigation. Thirty-eight have pleaded guilty, many seeking leniency, and eight are awaiting trials.
