NEW YORK -- The New York City mayor's race is featuring a cast of celebrities like few other municipal elections.

Democratic contender Bill de Blasio's (BLAH'-zee-ohz) star supporters include Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Sarah Jessica Parker and Russell Simmons.

On board for Democrat Christine Quinn: Whoopi Goldberg, Brooke Shields, Neil Patrick Harris and Rob Reiner, among others.

A fundraiser for Republican hopeful Joe Lhota (LOH'-tah) featured actor Steve Schirripa of "The Sopranos." Democratic candidate Bill Thompson announced an endorsement from salsa star Willie Colon.

Entertainers, athletes and other pop culture icons have lent star power for decades to national campaigns and some local ones, particularly in New York and Los Angeles.

Political observers say celebrities' endorsements might not sway voters, but stars can help with fundraising, getting attention and getting people to events.
