The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District resumed daily beach testing at Edgewater, Villa Angela Beach and Euclid Beach.
The purpose is to determine water quality at the three locations. testing will continue through the Labor Day weekend.
Many variables can impact the water quality of the beaches, including the presence of water fowl at the beach, the influence of Lake Erie currents, the fate of pollutants, like raw sewage, discharged into local water bodies, and stormwater run-off, which can carry motor oil, garbage and other pollutants into local water bodies, too.
Two beaches -- Euclid and Villa Angela - have historically been prone to high bacteria levels, exceeding EPA standards.
NEORSD developed a Nowcast model which predicts water quality for Villa Angela and Euclid Beach. This model was accurate 86 percent of the time in 2012.
Check the water quality at local beaches
The Nowcast model for Edgewater Beach was enhanced to include the use of data from a rapid method, which should increase the accuracy of the Edgewater Nowcast.
A Nowcast prediction of water quality will be provided each morning by 9:30 a.m., seven days a week.
