STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- The sidewalk in front of Center Middle School in Strongsville came alive Thursday night with students and their striking teachers.
Some 200 of them huddled together, urging the contract talks to continue.
For four days now, some 400 teachers have been walking the picket line. About 6,300 students are affected.
The student-organized rally drew the attention of many motorists passing by.
The crowd chanted, "Strong teachers, strong students" and participants lit candles.
The candles were more meaningful for the students.
"Even though they are not in the schools and they're not teaching us, the lessons that they taught us are with us when they're not there," senior Sarah Meter said.
The teachers union president says the federal mediator told both parties on Wednesday not to wait for the government; that they can contact each other for negotiations.
