This year Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northeast Ohio Affiliate will grant more than $1.2 million to support area breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs, including innovative organizations like the Karen P. Nakon Foundation.

A new grantee this year, the Nakon Foundation seeks to "keep the family in the home" by directly assisting with daily living expenses, hospital bills and other costs that arise when one is diagnosed with breast cancer. Komen's $25,000 grant will enable Nakon to expand its reach, helping more women worry less about paying the bills and focus more on getting healthy.

Diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer that had already spread to her lymph nodes when she was seven months pregnant with her third child, Karen Nakon had an emergency delivery and within four days was on a dose of quadruple chemotherapy.

For five years Karen would courageously fight the disease, even participating in experimental treatments that have advanced the way breast cancer is treated. It was Karen's idea to start a foundation that would alle- viate some of the financial stresses on the women and families battling the disease.

Matt Nakon, Karen's husband, founded the organization on February 22nd, 2003, the day of Karen's death and also her 38th birthday.

Says Matt,Chairman and President of the foundation, "the most needy patients find their way to us through a network of counselors and nurses at area hospitals. However, while we're doing a darn good job in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties, we wanted to expand our services to the 13 other counties that the Komen Northeast Ohio Affiliate serves. Komen's grant will help us do that."

"We are delighted to choose the Karen P. Nakon Foundation as a new grantee this year," says Sophie Sureau, Executive Director of Komen Northeast Ohio. "Through Nakon, our grant will directly assist those breast cancer patients who need it most."
