As of Thursday night, nine residents at the Menorah Park nursing home remain quarantined after contracting it, another 10 are quarantined in their assisted living facility; and visitors are restricted. Dozens more have overcome the illness at the Beachwood facility in recent days.
The disease made headlines after a number of passengers on cruise ships contracted it in Florida. The virus results in severe vomiting and diarrhea. It's also thought to be the cause of a Wellington Elementary school closing a few weeks ago.
"We see it in nursing homes and schools,” says Cuyahoga County Health Commissioner Terry Allan. “What we're seeing in this case is it spreading so easily from person to person. We're seeing it from skilled workers to assisted living and other areas of the facility."
"We automatically do quarantine so the disease doesn't spread further,” says Menorah Park spokeswoman Beth Silver.
The Centers for Disease Control calls this an epidemic nationwide.
It usually subsides after 24 to 48 hours.
