AKRON -- Two children were being treated in Akron Children's hospital Monday after they were thrown from a Ferris wheel Sunday. One child caught hold of the ride below; the other tumbled 25 feet to the ground. The ride is at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia, south of Canton. State investigators spent part of Monday looking into what triggered the malfunction. Dustin Rook, an area lifeguard, witnessed the accident. “They fell right out of the sky," he said. "You don’t see that every day." The victims are 5-year-old Alexandria Russell and 7-year-old Vincent Russell of Winter Park, Florida. The little girl, who fell to the ground, suffered a broken leg and is in fair condition. Her brother was treated for his injuries and released Monday evening. The Ferris wheel has been a staple at the park for over 60 years. The ride had a current license and had been inspected a little more than a month ago by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Agriculture records show some rider restraints were replaced last year. The two children involved in the accident were unsupervised on the ride and were not wearing safety belts.
