The 2013 Towpath Marathon has been rescheduled for November due to the ongoing government shutdown.
The Ohio Canal Corridor and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park have announced the race will be held on Nov. 3.
The shutdown has closed the nation's parks, including the CVNP.
Race organizers say today was the last date by which they could still pull off the logistics for the marathon on its original date.
"While we were hopeful that Congress would restart our government in time to allow the race to go forward as planned on this Sunday, those hopes have been dashed. ... Simply put, Congress has not acted, and we have run out of time," said Tim Donovan, executive director, Ohio Canal Corridor.
Donovan says the rescheduled date of Nov. 3 will allow the race to be run on the original course in the CVNP.
Organizers say they have also factored in the possibility that the government shutdown stalemate could continue on into next month.
"We have slotted into the CVNP calendar a second backup date, just in case Congress doesn't get that job done in time for a November 3 date -- that date is one week later -- November 10th."
Donovan says he hopes runners will stay with the race. But those runners that cannot make the new date should complete the following form for organizers.
