ELYRIA -- Elyria police pulled over a green Chevy Trailblazer that was traveling erratically and found a 12-year-old behind the wheel.
Just before 8:30 p.m. Monday, police pulled over the Trailblazer on Spruce Street near Woodland Avenue.
The passenger, identified as Scott E. Staron, 37, of Elyria, got out of the Trailblazer and started to approach the police cruiser while waving his arms.
The officer ordered him back into the vehicle and called for back-up.
When another officer arrived, police went up to the driver's side of the Trailblazer and found a boy, 12, behind the wheel. The boy said the passenger was his father.
Staron told officers that "I let him drive because I'm too drunk to drive and needed tools for work that are down the next street."
Police arrested Staron and charged him with disorderly conduct due to intoxication and child endangering. He was taken to jail where he stayed overnight.
Tuesday morning, he pleaded not guilty in Elyria Municipal Court, was released on $230 bond and has a pretrial scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 10 before Judge Lisa A. Locke Graves.
