AKRON -- In the aftermath of widespread flooding that struck Northeast Ohio, the American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties are stepping in to assist.
The Red Cross says it opened a shelter at its facility at 501 West Market Street around 7 p.m. Wednesday in anticipation that many would be evacuated from their homes due to the high water.

Approximately 23 people -- mostly from the Barberton area -- were admitted late Wednesday.
Officials say they expect more people today.
Emergency housing and food will be provided as needed.
The shelter will remain open until all individuals have found alternative accommodations or can return to their homes.
