Lonnie was initially taken to the Euclid Hospital Emergency Room before he was flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center.
After unsuccessful attempts to revive him, Lonnie was pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m.
Police say daycare personnel noticed Lonnie was missing after a swimming session and was later found in the pool by a lifeguard.
The incident remains under investigation.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy.
As a result of the incident the pool at the Euclid Family YMCA will be closed until further notice.
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland has released the following statement:
Dear Valued Members of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland,
I wanted to write to each of you to inform you of a most unfortunate situation which took place yesterday at our Euclid Family YMCA.
At approximately 4 p.m., a nine-year-old boy who was swimming as a part of a larger group of children was found unconscious at the bottom of the swimming pool, and was pulled out by one of three lifeguards on duty at the time. The young man was part of a group of children from an area day care center, which had rented the YMCA pool for the afternoon, allowing the children to swim.
CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation were performed until local paramedics arrived. The child was transported to Euclid General Hospital, and was later life-flighted to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he unfortunately passed away on Tuesday evening.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his parents and all the members of his family in this time of tremendous sorrow.
In light of this tragedy, the swimming pool at the Euclid Family YMCA will be closed until further notice. As Y members, we invite you to use any of the pools at our other branch locations in Northeast Ohio. The closest locations to the Euclid branch are the Hillcrest Family YMCA, 5000 Mayfield Road in Lyndhurst, and the Geauga Family YMCA, 12460 Bass Lake Road in Chardon.
It is never easy to lose a child, and I know you will join me in expressing your condolences to the young man's family in this time of loss. Our hearts go out to them.
