AKRON -- She's 289 pounds and eats up to seven pounds of meat per day -- Mandisa, a nearly 5-year-old lion, is now on exhibit at the Akron Zoo.

According to zoo officials, Mandisa has blended well with Tamarr, the male lion she shares the exhibit with daily.

At this time the Akron Zoo does not have a breeding recommendation for Mandisa and Tamarr.

Shani, the former female lion at the Akron Zoo, was recently transported to the Naples Zoo -- the same place Mandisa came from.

The relocations were a recommendation from the Lion Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Upon arriving at the Akron Zoo, Mandisa went through a 30-day quarantine period before being moved to the lion exhibit.

Mandisa was born July 19, 2008 at the NEW Zoo in Greenbay, Wis.

African lions are indigenous to the grasslands and semi-arid plains of sub-Saharan Africa. Their populations are classified as vulnerable, with numbers declining due to habitat loss throughout Africa.

Lions are Africa's largest carnivore.
