CLEVELAND -- Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Pamela Barker sentenced David Fields, 60, of Cleveland, to 13 years in prison for shooting a Seven Hills woman, 50, in the head with a BB gun in the parking lot of the CourtYard Marriott on Dec. 27.

Fields had been set for trial Wednesday but changed his not guilty plea to guilty to aggravated robbery and felonious assault.

Fields was represented by court-appointed attorney Henry Hilow.

Police say Fields approached the woman as she got into her SUV and fired five shots from a Black Phantom BB gun into her head. She had been at the hotel to meet her boss for breakfast.

Fields grabbed the woman's purse and ran.

She was taken to nearby Ahuja Medical Center where she was taken by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center.

Police from Woodmere, Solon, Beachwood, Pepper Pike, Moreland Hills and Warrensville Heights arrived for mutual aid and Fields was tracked into an open area nearby with Orange police K-9 Deacon and Solon K-9 Stryker.

He told police it was not a carjacking but he needed money.

He was out on parole the past year after spending 30 years in prison for aggravated murder.
