Tonight is the night Browns fans wait all year for, the NFL Draft.
Last year it was pretty clear the Browns had their eye on Trent Richardson and that the top two picks would be quarterbacks. The Browns traded up a spot to three to get their man. This year is much more complicated.
The Browns are once again under a new regime and have been tight lipped on their plans. It's hard to know exactly what the Browns will do because they pick sixth, which means they have to wait and see what the other five teams ahead of them does. It is also very possible the Browns could make a draft day trade. Rumors are flying that they may try and trade with Oakland to get the third pick but I don't completely buy that scenario.
I think there are enough guys the Browns like, that they can wait until the sixth pick and not give away more picks in a trade of that magnitude.
I do believe it is very possible they will trade down, get a player they like later in the first round and accumulate more picks, hopefully including a second round selection. I think this is exactly what the Browns want to do, and will do if they can. The problem is; it takes two to dance. They will have to find a trading partner, willing to give up picks to move up to six. I believe if they get a pick around eleven or twelve, they will select a quarterback most likely Geno Smith out of West Virginia. This may not come as a popular choice with fans, but I don't believe the Browns front office is sold on Brandon Weeden and won't let a franchise quarterback slip away, if they feel one of the quarterbacks available is a franchise QB. In this scenario they would get back into the second round and get a player that could come in and help this team right away.
If the Browns are not able to trade down and stay at six, I think it is wide open. I believe they should take another defensive player to add to a defense that I said all of last year was a major issue, even when it appeared to play well. They need another cornerback and they need an outside linebacker and there are options at those positions tonight.
And while I believe the Browns have a plan, they truly don't even know what they are going to do at this point. Let's say Rob Chudzinski and Norv Turner believe they can turn Weeden into an elite QB in this league and have convinced Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi of that. Then there is no way they select a quarterback tonight, if not I can really see the Browns selecting Geno Smith at six.
If they do go defense the best options are Alabama CB Dee Milliner, Oregon LB Dion Jordan, BYU DE/OLB Ziggy Ansah and LSU LB/DE Barkevious Mingo. Let me throw in Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones as a wild card. His draft value has dropped due to injury and his size, but I think this guy is a beast on the field and could one day dominate in the NFL. I know Browns fans won't want to hear this, but drafting Alabama guard Chance Warmack may be the safest pick the Browns could make. Yes, while I realize drafting a guard is not exciting this guy will start on day one and barring injury will have a long NFL career. He would help the Browns in a position that isn't mentioned as much as others, but is a big need.
Happy draft day Browns fans... enjoy!
